This STIHL chainsaw clutch is a three-shoe centrifugal assembly for selected STIHL homeowner and compact professional chainsaws. It replaces a worn clutch that slips under load, engages unevenly or no longer transfers engine power reliably to the clutch drum.

As engine speed rises, centrifugal force moves the shoes outwards against the clutch drum. Consequently, the drum begins turning and drives the chain through the sprocket. At idle, the springs retract the shoes so that the drum and chain can stop.
A glazed, cracked or overheated clutch can cause poor acceleration, excessive heat or inconsistent chain engagement. Nevertheless, inspect the clutch drum, rim or spur sprocket and needle bearing before fitting the new part, because wear in these components can produce similar symptoms.
The clutch uses a left-hand thread. Therefore, loosen and tighten it in the correct direction, lock the piston with an approved service method and follow the specified installation procedure. Finally, confirm that the chain remains stationary at idle after completing the repair.
