Description
This Briggs & Stratton recoil starter is a complete aftermarket pull-start assembly for selected small petrol engines used in lawnmowers and other garden equipment.
It replaces the original starter configuration associated with Briggs & Stratton OEM references 499706 and 690101, subject to the engine version, starter mounting arrangement and required pull-cord length.
The assembly features a recoil housing, internal starter pulley and spring mechanism, pull cord and starter handle.

OEM References
- 499706 – recoil starter with approximately 88⅝-inch factory rope
- 690101 – recoil starter with approximately 70-inch factory rope
Both references appear in the same Briggs & Stratton starter-system parts family, but the specified rope lengths differ. Check the required rope routing and starter housing before installation.
Starter Function
Pulling the starter handle rotates the pulley and engages the engine’s starting mechanism. The recoil spring returns the cord to its original position after release.
A replacement starter can resolve problems such as:
- Broken or frayed pull cord
- Starter rope failing to retract
- Worn starter pulley
- Damaged recoil spring
- Cracked starter housing
- Starter failing to engage the engine
Installation Checks
Compare the original starter housing, mounting-hole pattern and engagement mechanism with the replacement.
Check whether the engine uses an appropriate starter cup and ratchet or pawl arrangement. These engine-mounted components are separate from the recoil housing.
Install the starter securely, route the pull cord correctly and test the recoil mechanism several times before starting the engine.
This is an aftermarket replacement starter, not a genuine Briggs & Stratton OEM part.
