Important Compatibility Information
Briggs & Stratton engines with similar horsepower ratings can use different starter assemblies.
Before ordering, check the complete Model, Type and Code numbers stamped on the engine and confirm the starter reference in the corresponding parts diagram.
Starter Function
The recoil starter rotates the engine crankshaft during manual starting. Pulling the handle engages the starting mechanism, while the internal spring returns the rope after release.
A replacement starter addresses problems such as:
- Broken or frayed starter rope
- Starter rope failing to retract
- Damaged recoil spring
- Cracked starter housing
- Worn starter pulley
- Starter failing to engage the engine
Installation Recommendations
Compare the original starter housing, mounting-hole arrangement and engine engagement mechanism with the replacement.
Inspect the engine-mounted starter cup and related components for wear or damage. These components must engage correctly with the starter assembly.
Mount the replacement securely and pull the rope slowly several times to verify engagement and smooth retraction.
This is an aftermarket replacement starter, not a genuine Briggs & Stratton OEM product.
