Description
This Stihl MS460 clutch is an aftermarket three-shoe centrifugal clutch for selected Stihl 044, 046, MS440, MS460, MS461, MS341 and MS361 petrol chainsaws. It transfers engine power to the clutch drum as the engine speed increases and disengages when the engine returns to idle.
The aftermarket assembly is marketed as a replacement across two related Stihl clutch families. Consequently, it is associated with references 1128 160 2004 and 1135 160 2050. Worn clutch shoes or weakened springs may cause slipping, overheating, delayed engagement or inconsistent chain drive. However, a chain that moves at idle can also indicate excessive idle speed rather than clutch failure. Therefore, check the carburetor setting before replacing the clutch.
Before installation, compare the centre thread, carrier construction, shoe profile, spring arrangement and overall dimensions. In addition, inspect the clutch drum, sprocket, needle bearing, crankshaft thread, oil-pump drive and chain brake.
Remove compacted sawdust and oily deposits from the clutch area. Furthermore, follow the correct removal and installation procedure for the specific chainsaw model. After fitting, rotate the drum by hand and check for binding.
Finally, start the saw safely and confirm that the chain remains stationary at idle but engages smoothly when the engine speed rises.
