Description

This STIHL 038 clutch is a three-shoe centrifugal assembly for selected STIHL 038-series, MS380 and MS381 chainsaws. It replaces a worn clutch that slips, overheats or engages the cutting chain inconsistently.

As the engine accelerates, centrifugal force moves the clutch shoes outwards until they contact the inside of the clutch drum. Consequently, the drum turns the sprocket and drives the cutting chain. When the engine returns to idle, the springs retract the shoes so that the chain can stop.

Heat discoloration, cracked springs, glazed contact surfaces or excessive shoe movement can indicate clutch wear. However, inspect the clutch drum, sprocket and needle bearing as well, because damage in these components can cause vibration, noise and poor chain drive.

The assembly uses a left-hand thread. Therefore, turn it in the correct direction during removal and installation. Use a suitable clutch tool and follow an approved piston-locking procedure rather than striking the clutch carrier. In addition, keep oil and grease away from the shoe contact surfaces.

After installation, rotate the drum by hand and check for free movement. Then start the saw safely and verify that the chain remains stationary at the specified idle speed. Finally, investigate the carburettor or idle setting if the new clutch still engages while the engine idles.
