A scored cylinder, damaged piston or worn rings can reduce compression and make the engine difficult to start. Additionally, the engine may lose power under load or show visible exhaust-side piston damage.
Nevertheless, determine the cause of the original failure before fitting the new parts. A lean carburettor setting, blocked air filter, leaking crankshaft seal, incorrect fuel mixture, restricted cooling fins or inadequate lubrication can damage the replacement cylinder.
Before assembly, inspect the crankshaft bearings, connecting rod and piston-pin bearing. Furthermore, clean all fragments and abrasive dust from the crankcase. This step is particularly important on a cut-off saw, because fine mineral dust can enter the engine if the filtration system leaks.
Lubricate the piston, rings and cylinder bore with suitable two-stroke oil. Then orient the piston correctly, align the rings with their locating pins and use new sealing components. Finally, follow the model-specific tightening sequence and carburettor settings before returning the machine to service.
